Adult Guardianship & Trusteeship Act

Darrell Cook
1948-2010

Darrell Cook was a strong advocate for persons with disabilities who gave generously of his time and money in this endeavour. Darrell and his wife Sheilagh were founding members of the RoadAhead Society of Calgary. Darrell took on many projects for us, such as organizing a golf tournament to raise funds and awareness for the RoadAhead and its cause. His company, Gibraltar Mortgage, has been a long-time supporter of us, providing us with funding, office space and meeting space.
More recently, Darrell was very involved in making the Registered Disability Savings Plan (RDSP) a valuable resource for families that have a member with a disability. He participated in the nationwide lobbying to enact the Federal RDSP legislation. Then, he was a key lobbyist with the Provincial Government to make sure Alberta benefits and funding would not be clawed back from persons with disabilities because they owned an RDSP. When all of these things came into alignment, he offered workshops on the RDSP in the Calgary area as recently as last November. The photo above was taken at such a workshop.
Darrell also worked with other organizations that help persons with disabilities to become included in society. These include the Alberta Association for Community Living, and Calgary Family Voices.
Darrell passed away after a brief struggle with pancreatic cancer. He is survived by his wife Sheilagh and children, Jocelyn and Devan.
The family has requested that, in lieu of flowers, people may give donations to the RoadAhead Society in memory of Darrell. You can do so by mailing a donation to the address at the left, or by our online donation system at Canada helps, where you can specify that the donation is in honour of Darrell. All donors will receive a charitable receipt for tax purposes.
