For the first time in history, people with disabilities are out-living their parents.
For those of us who have a family member with a disability, the question of what will happen to our loved one when we die or can no longer care for them, is very real and often very frightening.
PLAN Calgary – The Road Ahead Society was established in 2000 by and for families who were looking for answers to the above question. With deinstitutionalizing, advances in medical care, and greater emphasis in government and society on inclusion and greater quality of life, people with disabilities are now living longer, more meaningful lives. Their families – and, indeed, their communities – want this to be possible for the rest of their loved one’s life and have realized that this includes thoughtful and thorough planning and advocacy for such time when they, as primary caregivers, are no longer able to care for their loved one with a disability.
PLAN Calgary – The Road Ahead Society became an affiliate of PLAN (Planned Lifetime Advocacy Network) in 2002.
